South Dakota Days, Part I or "Our East Side Story"

When thinking about where a fancy, jet-setting family like ours should go for a summer vacation, there was only one logical choice... South Dakota! Jealous? Truthfully, my brother and his wife moved up there last year and I figured there's only about a 2-month window (i.e. July & August) of any given year when we could see their new home without fear of freezing to death. Easy now, I'm not saying it's a logical fear. Auntie C & I have birthdays in August and only a week apart SO, what better time to make a visit to beautiful SD than during our birthday week? The Kumquat, her daddy and I made the long drive there in one night. Except for one catastrophe little mishap involving a flat tire in the middle of a storm at 3 am about 30 miles from my brother's house, we made it up there without too much trouble. Many, many thanks to my friend over at Bubs & Chubs and to my 5 backyard friends for their parts in making a peaceful 10-hour drive with a 9-month-old possible.

Anywho...
We finally made it there and got a big taste of South Dakota right away! Sadly, our late, late night (early morning) arrival meant that we missed out on the pig wrestling, demolition derby & minnow races, but we got there just in time for Auntie C's birthday AND Pheasant Fest!
Pheasant is serious business around those parts. They boast some of the best pheasant hunting in the world (or so I'm told). So, for Pheasant Fest local businesses cook up pheasant in various ways & have a lovely little street festival where you can load up on all the pheasant and delicious homemade desserts you can eat for $6. I love small towns. :) We tried just about everything there. The pheasant pizza was pretty amazing, I have to say. I think I probably ate about as many desserts as pheasant, though. But it's Birthday Week, so that's how we do it!
Uncle D & the Birthday Girl
No pheasant for babies! Maybe next year. :)
She did enjoy her fruit & corn muffins, though!
Pheasant Tacos... nummy!
Main Street (of course) and the town hall. So cute, right??
Even the trash cans were so cute!
After our big day of South Dakota eatin', we went to the local country club the following day for a round of golf. I have to say that the place does give new meaning to the term "country club..."
It was very pretty, though, and a nice course. Or so I'm told.
I really don't know about these things. I took some golf lessons in Charlotte back when we lived there, but then I got so busy with work - oh, and pregnant - that golf kinda fell by the wayside. So, this actually was my first real round of golf. Yay! Being South Dakota, it was no problem to bring the Kumquat on the course with us. And K didn't seem to mind, either.
Auntie C & I did our best to class up the place.
Uncle D working on his swing.
After our highly competitive exhausting epic 9 holes, we had lunch in the rockin' clubhouse.

The following day, we took a trip to the thriving metropolis of Sioux Falls. It occurred to DKG & I that the footwear I'd packed for us wasn't really appropriate for hiking around Western South Dakota (what? no flip flops?)... especially where there are snakes and such. So, darn, we had to get some new kicks. Oh, and a new tire. Can you guess which one I was all about? While we were at the mall, Auntie C, Kumquat & I stopped by Wacky Bear (which totally makes me think of McDowell's from Coming to America) and Auntie C got a present for Baby K!
The Kumquat has a new BFF! Oh, and she loves the kitty, too. :) Unfortunately for DKG, the tire situation did not get resolved that day. So, the following day he headed back to SF (Sioux Falls, not San Fran, silly ones) and we just chilled at D & C's and prepared for our big adventure Out West the following day.
That evening, we drove to a nearby town and went to the driving range there. My sweet golfing Kumquat had lots of fun. Lately, balls have become one of her favorite toys. She played catch with her daddy for the first time about a month ago and it's been non-stop ball action ever since. Can you imagine what a driving range must be like for such a baby? She was over the moon! And a bit of a handful, since she desperately wanted to get all of the balls she could find. It didn't hurt that the range uses bright yellow ones. Thankfully, I'd brought along one of her own and Auntie C loaned Baby K one of her hot pink ones. Now that's good times. So, she hung out on her blanket while Auntie & I took turns playing with and taking pictures of our sweet girl.
See, Mama? You just need to bend your left wrist a bit more on the back swing and it'll go much better.Along with her love of balls, she has recently started doing the sign for "ball!" Exciting, huh? She's had a bit of a developmental explosion over the past 2 weeks, but I'll save most of that for another post. I thought I'd include this video, though, since it does include some of her new favorite things... :)

And after the driving range, we drove by the area's tourist mecca... The Mitchell Corn Palace. That's right. Corn Palace.

And it's not even Iowa. ;) To my dismay, I learned that the entire building is not actually made of corn. It is pretty amazing, though. The walls are all decorated with corn pieces (husks, I think) in a theme that changes each year. It's impressive to me that they take it all down and recreate it every year. So this year's theme is "America's Destinations." See the St. Louis Arch?
We didn't go inside, but I heard from the locals (aka Uncle D & Auntie C) that the outside is really the part to see. I'm not entirely sure what Baby K thought of it all, but I think it was something along the lines of "Silly South Dakotans!"
After our corny excitement, it was time to head home to get ready for our next adventure... A trip to the Badlands of the Wild West in search of the Gilded Golden Butterfly to see the Badlands, the Black Hills and these guys...

Amuse-Yeux

Familiar with the term "amuse-bouche?" Just in case you're not, here's a little description from my good friend, Wikipedia:
An amuse-bouche also called an amuse-gueule, is a single, bite-sized hors d’œuvre. Amuse-bouche are different from appetizers in that they are not ordered from a menu by patrons, but, when served, are according to the chef's selection alone. These, often accompanied by a complementing wine, are served as an excitement of taste buds to both prepare the guest for the meal and to offer a glimpse into the chef's approach to cooking.

I'm excited to share pics of our recent escapades, but I'm still trying to dig myself out from the post-vacation chaos and I'm not sure how long it'll take me to go through them. So, for now, I offer you an "amuse-yeux" ("yeux" is the French word for "eyes," in case ya didn't know) of our sweet traveling Kumquat. Compliments of the photographer. Enjoy! :)

A Month in Pictures

Since it's been ages since I wrote a real post and we have a lot of adventures to tell you about, I thought I'd just skim through them all in one long post & give you the month in pictures!

July 2
Baby K turned 8 months old!

July 3 - 4
We headed for Missouri to reconnect with lots of family & old friends (including K's godmother, Auntie V...
and the priest who did our wedding!)
We spent the 4th in St. Louis for the wedding of one of my dear friends from college. It was actually the first time I'd seen her in 10 years! Crazy! There were 4 of us that were very close. It was a wonderful reunion for 3 of us, but we sure missed you, Chare!

July 5
We also had a chance to go to Mass at the Catholic Student Center, which is where we were married.
Then we had a lovely lunch with a dear friend before heading out to the St. Louis Zoo with one of DKG's best friends from college & his family.
It is seriously a FABULOUS zoo. If you're ever in the Lou, I totally recommend it. Besides being amazing, it's FREE. Yep, free. I'd been quite content with our zoo until this visit. Now I have total zoo envy! Did I mention that it's free??!

July 6 - 9
After that, DKG headed home (since apparently someone in this family has to work!) and the Kumquat & I headed on to visit Grammy in Farmington, where I grew up.
It has been years since I was there, so that was fun. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to catch up with many people. Grammy had broken a couple ribs the day before we arrived, so we really spent most of the time helping her out. We'll definitely have to make a trip back soon to have a do-over. Fortunately, Grammy was able to hold the baby girl (if I was very careful in the hand-off) and had a good time with K.

July 9 - 10
Baby K & I headed home. Oh, did I mention that we drove?
And that I insisted DKG fly home and K & I drive? And that I'm clearly insane? The girl was great for the first day & all but 2 hours or so of the second. By then she was d-o-n-e, but, sadly, we were not yet home. Not so fun for either of us. We did have a good time at a rest stop where she was happy as a clam...
but the meltdown resumed as soon as we got back into the car. We won't be doing that again. Oh wait... we're doing that again in about a week. Yup, my idea.

July 11 - 23
We were home for 12 whole days!! Up to our usual fun & games, like:
hanging out at the pool...
grocery shopping...
taking baths...
having picnics on the deck...
watching the ducks at Bradley Fair (Look how long her hair is! And, no, it's not a toupee!)...
brunching at The Good Egg...
and sporting ridiculously cute Cardinals gear...

July 24 - 28
We took our baby to Vegas, baby! We stayed at the Palazzo as we celebrated Lolo & Lola's wedding anniversary.
Baby K got to spend lots of fun time with them and with Tita A.
I feel like I hardly saw DKG the whole time (That's how we do in Vegas... the boys golf & the girls go to the pool. It was a bazillion degrees there; we totally got the better end of that deal!)...
but I guess I'll have more opportunities to see him soon. Right? I mean, I do live with him and all.

DKG & I got to see Jersey Boys while Lola, Lolo & Tita A babysat for us.
It was a fabulous show! And I hear fun was had (and some sign language learned!) by all back in the suite while we were gone.

July 29 - 30
Home again, home again, jiggity-jog.
Back to reviewing general surgery...
having picnics in the yard...

and standing up!!

July 31
This would have been my dad's 78th birthday. I'd intended to devote an entire post to him that day, but it just hasn't happened. Suffice it to say, he's one of the hugest influences in my life and I miss him terribly every day. This year (five years after he passed) is honestly the first time I've been able to really think about him without getting choked up. The times that do still really get me are when my Kumquat does something that I know would delight him. Or when I think about the fact that she'll grow up not knowing that amazing man. I never knew his parents and those grandparents were always sort of shadowy figures in my life that I have never had any true feelings for... in spite of the fact that I'm named for my grandmother. It breaks my heart to think it might be the same way for her. I hope and pray that I'll be able to share his life with her in a way that will help her feel like she knows her grandfather. I see him so much in my brothers and it does make me happy that she'll at least know him through them, even if it's not directly. I love you and miss you, Papa.

Now on to August!!

Number Nine, Number Nine...

A longer post (actually several) is in the works, but I do want to say happy 9 month birthday to my sweet girl! (she was enjoying the breeze!)
